Benefits of the HiSET® Program
Developed in partnership with states and adult educators
Collaboratively created by ETS and stakeholders across the nation, the HiSET® exam was developed to ensure that it:
- is consistent with the curricular emphasis found in today’s high schools
- aligns with the College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education
- maintains rigor while presenting test items that are in accessible contexts for adult learners
Selected by states in over half of the United States as a qualifying exam for their state-issued High School Equivalency (HSE) credential, the HiSET exam is the fastest growing HSE test on the market.
Created by assessment development experts
ETS has continually demonstrated its expertise in effectively reaching institutions, influencers, employers and test takers worldwide. For more than 65 years, ETS has been recognized as a global leader in assessment development. ETS has developed some of the most widely accepted large-scale assessments used by organizations and institutions around the globe, including the GRE® and TOEFL® tests. Our rigorous research and exacting standards ensure that our assessments are fair, valid and reliable.
Leading the way with more than 50 million tests administered and scored at more than 9,000 locations in 180 countries each year, ETS is uniquely qualified to develop and deliver a nationally recognized high school equivalency test.
Recognized by federal and state agencies
Current federal legislation leaves the decision to states to select their high school equivalency testing options and to award their credentials. This decision is enacted in recent legislation such as: the Higher Education Act, the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, the Workforce Investment Act, the Adult Education Act, and the Perkins Career and Technical Education Act.
The HiSET program has worked with government agencies to ensure that those earning a credential by passing the HiSET exam will be recognized for purposes of meeting federal education requirements, such as to qualify for federal student aid in the form of grants, loans and work-study funds.
High School Equivalency (HSE) credentials are portable — which means they are recognized and valid across states in the same way a high school diploma is recognized.
