HiSET® Test Preparation

The HiSET® program offers a variety of preparation materials to help test takers prepare for the exam. These items include a tutorial video, a study companion, practice tests, sample questions and much more!

Free Test Preparation Materials

Tutorial Video

Test takers can watch a brief video (Flash, 10:34 min.) to learn more about the HiSET exam and the computer-delivered test, including information about the computer screens and navigation.

Study Companion

Test takers can use the free Study Companion to familiarize themselves with the test content, test question formats and available study resources for each HiSET subtest. Download the Study Companion.

Practice Tests

The HiSET program offers a free practice test for each subtest. Test takers can experience what it is like to take the HiSET exam with these free, 30–45-minute practice tests. Each subtest is half the length of the actual subtest and includes directions and tips as well as an answer key. Questions are similar to those on the tests, so test takers get an indication of their readiness and where they need to improve. Download the practice tests. Test takers can use the Are You Ready to Take the HiSET exam? chart to determine their practice test scores.

Interactive Practice Tests for the HiSET Exam

Test takers can experience what it is like to take the computer-delivered HiSET exam by taking these free, 30–45-minute interactive practice tests. The questions used on these computer-delivered practice tests are the same items from the HiSET Free Practice Tests (FPT2) provided in an interactive practice test format.

When they take the interactive practice tests, test takers receive immediate feedback on the correctness of their responses, an estimate of their level of readiness for the real test and an estimate of their HiSET scaled score on this test. They can then review the questions together with explanations for the correct answers.

CBAL™ Quick Math Practice

The CBAL™ Quick Math Practice system was developed as part of the Cognitively Based Assessment of, for, and as Learning (CBAL™) Initiative at ETS.

With the CBAL Quick Math Practice, test takers can improve their mathematics skills by practicing with short exercises that focus on core mathematical concepts and procedures. Although the exercises in the Quick Math Practice are not the same as the questions they will see on the HiSET mathematics subtest, they can complement their preparation for it.

Access the CBAL Quick Math Practice system.

Sample Questions

Test takers can familiarize themselves with the types of questions that appear on the five subtests. Correct answers with explanations are included. Download the Sample Questions.
