HiSET® Eligibility and Fees
Both eligibility requirements and fees vary by state or jurisdiction. Make sure you’re familiar with the requirements in your location so you can answer test-taker questions.
Each state has its own eligibility requirements. Before doing anything else, test takers should check to make sure that they are eligible to take the HiSET® exam in your state or jurisdiction. Requirements typically involve:
- minimum age
- practice test or instruction
- school enrollment status
HiSET fees vary by state or jurisdiction. The base charge for the HiSET exam is $10 per subtest. However, additional test center and administrative fees may apply.
Effective January 1, 2019, the cost of each subtest will increase.
Please log in to your HiSET account or call ETS Customer Service at 1-855-MyHiSET (1-855-694-4738) for more information.
Multiple payment options are available, though it will depend on how test takers schedule their appointment.
Test takers are encouraged to schedule online (where permitted) and can pay using one of the following methods:
- debit card or credit card (American Express®, Discover®, MasterCard®, VISA® or JCB)
- HiSET Test Voucher
Test takers must pay at the time their exam is scheduled, so cash isn’t an option. However, if a test taker only has cash, he or she can use one of the payment methods outlined in the Cash Options for HiSET Test Takers flyer.
Scheduling by phone
Test takers who schedule by phone can use one of the following payment methods:
- debit card or credit card (American Express, Discover, MasterCard, VISA or JCB)
- HiSET Test Voucher
Scheduling at the test center
Payment policies vary by state or jurisdiction. Some test centers can collect administration fees directly from test takers. Be sure to have your test takers review their state policies and the payment and refund policies before they schedule their exam.
