HiSET® Fees, Payment and Refund Policies

The actual price of the HiSET® exam varies depending on where you test. To see what it will cost you to take the exam in your location, see Requirements by State or Jurisdiction.

Payment policies

How you'll pay for the exam depends on how you schedule it.

If you schedule online

You can pay by:

  • debit card or credit card (American Express®, Discover®, MasterCard®, VISA® or JCB)
  • PayPal®
  • HiSET Test Voucher

You have to pay for the exam when you schedule it. If you only have cash, you can:

  • use PayPal Cash® to fund a PayPal account
  • purchase a VISA, MasterCard or American Express gift card

If you're purchasing a prepaid credit card or gift card, make sure the card can be used for online purchases. To learn more about how you can use one of these payment methods, download the Cash Options for HiSET Test Takers flyer.

If you schedule by phone

You can pay by:

  • debit card or credit card (American Express, Discover, MasterCard, VISA or JCB)
  • HiSET Test Voucher

You can't use a PayPal account to pay over the phone.

Note: A $10 fee will be applied when registering by phone.

If you schedule at a test center

Payment policies vary by test center. Call your test center to ask what payment methods they accept.

Refund policies

You can get a refund if you need to cancel your exam, but first you need to decide if you're canceling or rescheduling.

  • Canceling — you're not taking the HiSET exam or the subtests within a year of your purchase, and you want a refund.
  • Rescheduling — you need a new appointment date, time or test center.

There are some situations where you'll automatically be eligible for a refund or free reschedule. For instance, your test center may have a power outage and you can't test. These instances are handled on a case-by-case basis. See reschedule policies.

Below you'll find some basic information about the HiSET refund policies. Your state may have its own policies too, so be sure to check your state requirements before you make any changes.

You're eligible for a full refund of your test fee if you cancel by 11:59 p.m. local time the day before your scheduled appointment.

Any fees that were paid to the state, jurisdiction or test center are nonrefundable.

You won't receive a refund for rescheduling your appointment since you're still going to take the exam.

Depending on where you take the exam or how many times you've rescheduled, there may be a fee to reschedule your appointment. For more information, see Requirements by State.
